Week 1 Introduction

Hi everyone!

I'm a senior here at the University of Oklahoma and I am HES Pre-Med major.  I am currently in Human Anatomy, Wellness in Native Communities, Human Sexuality II, and of course this class, Mythology and Folklore.  I'm unfortunately not much of a go-getter so I am not involved much on campus, but I still do a lot of work with my church back in my hometown.  I play the banjo, too many video games unfortunately, tennis, table tennis, and volleyball.  My favorite movies are Star Wars, just about anything Marvel, and Tropic Thunder.  I really enjoy bluegrass (hence why I play banjo), alternative, and indie rock.  Several of my favorite bands/artists are Mumford and Sons, Trampled by Turtles, and Old Crow Medicine Show.  I burnt myself out of reading while in High School so I don't read much anymore other than what is assigned.  One of my favorite things are LEGO, which even though I am much older than the suggested age, I still enjoy building.  If they weren't so expensive and hard to come by I would probably still buy them.

I have a cat named Skippyjon Jones, or just Skippy for short, who is a goofball.  He got that name titular character from the story, Skippyjon Jones by Judy Schachner, due to his resemblance and how he generally gets into mischief.

This summer, I worked for my dad in the oil patch and also took Human Physiology here at OU, so I didn't get much of a break.  Its been nice for a change though because I felt like when I came into this semester, I was already in the swing of things and not lulled into a false sense of security that usually comes from having a summer off.

  1. I can see that you are major in HES Pre-Med; as for me, the medical major is extremely hard and which is important for all humans, but that should be dull, thus I really realize that you are awesome! I can see that your are interested in banjo and building, which makes me think that you are different from others. As for me, doing something that you like enjoyable.

  2. Hey. Chris! Working over the summer is definitely a great way of preventing what I'm going through right now, which is the inability to motivate myself to work hard in the first week. I should be more ready to work by Week 2 though (that's almost always the case with me). Human Physiology sounds like a good class to keep yourself on your toes during the summer too, at least from what I've heard about it. I have two friends, both of them HES majors--one of them is taking Human Anatomy this semester like you are--and know several people at OU Medical, and all of them tell me that Physiology is quite a challenge. It must feel really good to have that out of the way. Better get those flash cards ready for anatomy (don't know if you're the type that uses them though, but I've heard their useful for a memorization-heavy classes like that)!

  3. Hi Chris!

I hope you are having a great first week back at OU. It is awesome to see an Heath and Exercise Science Pre-Med major in a class like this. I'm excited to see the cool perspective you will bring to the course. I have never met a banjo player before! I feel like that is a really hard instrument to play, as it is played at such a quick speed.

I am quite jealous that you took a class over the summer. Although I was working through internships, I did feel that lull this week. You definitely have a leg up on everyone else with that experience. I hope you have a wonderful semester; it looks like you are taking some great classes!

  4. Oh, I know exactly what you mean about LEGO, Chris... when I was little, they were my favorite toy: I would spend hours and hours playing with LEGO while listening to books on tape (and this was back in the early 1970s, when books on tape meant big reel-to-reel tapes... my grandmother was blind, which is why we had tape recorders and books on tape around the house) - to this day, I still love to listen to books on tape, and I play LEGO with my husband's grandchildren every chance I get! And I also really like to watch the LEGO videos that people make. Aren't those amazing? I guess it's a good thing we didn't have stuff like that when I was a little because I probably would have dropped out of school to make LEGO videos all the time, ha ha. And that picture of Skippy is ADORABLE... he looks like a cat who is part of a story, a cat on a mission... so cute! Maybe Skippy can be the hero of your Storybook this semester: he sounds worthy of becoming a mythical legend of his own! :-)

  5. When I saw that you said you played the Banjo, my immediate response was to wonder if you liked Mumford and Sons! Naturally - those guys play a mean banjo, which I'm sure only a banjo player can appreciate just how mean! I am also Pre-Med (Microbiology) so I'm sure our paths will cross at some point (even if we don't realize it - or if they haven't already!) I would love to take Physiology, I'm hoping to fit in in somewhere in the midst of all the chemistry I'm taking. I'm not really much of a cat person - nothing personal, I'm just allergic - but I have to say that yours is pretty darn cute. I also love all things Marvel, but if I had to pick a favorite Avenger, it would most definitely be the Cap. I really really really like X-Men as well! Good luck with your semester!

  6. I can totally relate when you say that you are not a go getter. As I too aren’t about that campus life lol. I am not really involved in much campus activity too. Maybe in another life. I enjoy playing video games also. Unfortunately my wife hates it as she says once you start playing you forget everything around you even if the house was on fire. I guess it might be a guy thing. I admire your activeness in other hobbies and your church. Good for you. I look forward to reading more of your work.

  7. Your Lego sculpture is so cool!! Legos are really expensive. How long did it take you to make it? Last semester, I built a miniature “Fallingwater House” with my friends and it took us an hour and a half with instructions too. I cannot imagine how long it took you to build that. I’m not much of a cat person because I am allergic, but your cat is ADORABLE! I like his name too!

  8. I love that you have a cat. Apparently, it's rare for guys to like cats, but my dad and I certainly prefer them. By the way, have you ever built any of the LEGO architecture sets? There are some pretty good ones that are based on houses built by Frank Lloyd Wright. And I hope human anatomy is going well for you. I will say that Cindy is a great professor!

  9. Hi, Chris! You play the banjo and I pretend I know how to pay the mandolin. Let's make a band and write songs based off of mythology! Whoo! I totally know what you mean about getting burnt out on books. I took AP English classes which should be renamed "Let's Read Books." I finally got back into loving non-fiction, though, and now I can't stop! I don't know what kinds of things you like, but Neil Gaiman's stuff is what got me back into reading. Very much recommended! If you like being immersed into a whole mess of amazing stories, then S. by JJ Abrams is perfect. I can't stop talking about it. It's just such an experience.

Hope you have a great semester!

  10. Some people may not like legos and sci fi movies, but those people are dumb and never get jobs. So, you seem to be pretty cool if you ask me. Your musical tastes are good too. I swear if anyone thinks that Darius Rucker can do Wagon Wheel better than Old Crow Medicine Show, then they need to be institutionalized.
I do not generally like cats, but that one looks like it would be alright.

  11. Hi, Chris!

It was nice to get to read through your introduction and learn a little bit more about you. I am also a senior HES major, so I am very familiar with most of the classes you are taking. I have to say the anatomy classes kind of weirded me out in the beginning. However, by this point in the semester, I found it really fascinating! Good luck with everything for the rest of the semester!

  12. Hey Chris,

I feel like there are a lot of HES majors in this class. I am one as well. I am currently taking Human Sexuality 1 and it is really weirding me out. I don't think I will take the second one if I can help it. I am extremely impressed with your lego skills. Your Bobo Fett is AMAZING. I hope you had better luck with Anatomy here than I did! It was a real struggle but I still learned SO much.

  13. Hey there! Haven’t got to meet you yet so this is neat.
Gosh, I’m surrounded by med-school people. Not much different from real life though, most of my friends are science majors XP. I totally agree with you on the legos bit - I love legos. And building things. But mostly legos. In fact, my Grandmother thought I was going to be an architect after I once built a temple out of legos. If I could stomach math at all it might be true, haha! Hope the last bit of the semester goes good!
